I decided to write this blog as a celebration of Black Models in the fashion industry! Although Black Women are still massively under-represented in High Fashion Magazines and on the Catwalk- they are still getting noticed and this blog page is to celebrate again, the paths that people like Naomi Campbell and women before her, who have carved an easier path than the rocky roads they would have faced to become the Top Models they are today.
As a black woman I would like to see more images of Women of Colour as much as I would like to see anybody else. The World is full of beauty in so many colours and forms, so why shouldn’t this be represented as such? Young girls of all races should be made to feel that whatever they are born with- from the hair on their heads to the colour of their skin-is beautiful and that it is accepted and embraced equally all over the Fashion Globe.
So I raise a blog toast to all the Nubian Models who are making their mark in the tough industry of Fashion and inspire further, younger models like themselves who will continue to carry the torch of equality.
Miss Naomi Campbell is a world-renowned Supermodel who has been in the Modelling industry for nearly 25 years! After being discovered at the tender age of 15years in Streatham, South London, she went on to become the FIRST BLACK model EVER to grace the cover of Vogue UK, Vogue Nippon and Vogue China.
Her Personal life (as well as her hairline) has had a lot negative media coverage, but Naomi Campbell is a tough cookie, which has kept her at the top of her modelling career. She has an incredible look and appears like she could potentially be modelling for many years to come. She has done a lot of charity work including Fashion Relief where she raised more than $ 1 million dollars to help victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2007.
NubianSisters definitely salutes Naomi Campbell!
I think Jourdann Dunn is fierce! Her look reminds me of Naomi Campbell in some way. Like the Supermodel, Jourdann originates from London and I have little doubt that this young 22 year old will certainly make her mark on the foundations of the Fashion Industry. She was named Model of the Year in 2008’s British Fashion Awards and she has since failed to disappoint. She was the first Black Model to runway for Prada in nearly 10 years! She has modelled for various designers including Marc Jacobs, Ralph Lauren and Topshop. I hope we will continue to see her strut down runways and gain more exposure with every year!
I absolutely love what Alek Wek stands for- she has dark berry like skin with full lips and a beautiful prescence. How can anyone argue that this Nubian model is not beautiful? I massively beg to differ- modelling is not all about ‘classic’ Hollywood beauty and that is what makes her stand out from the crowd. She is a Sudanese woman who is one of nine children! She has battled civil war in her family but since being discovered in Crystal Palace, South London, life has certainly taken on an unexpected twist. She herself probably could not believe at a young age she would see her fortunes reverse to becoming part of major ad campaigns such as Issey Miyake, Moschino and Victoria’s Secrets.
Alek also is heavily involved in charitable organisations such as UNICEF, Doctors Without Borders and is a missionary for World Vision which helps suffers of AIDS.
Chanel Iman is only 21 years old already considered to be one of the most successful African-American High Fashion Models of her era.
She is beautiful mix of Korean and African-American heritage and with her long limbs and editorial look, she has been the first black model to walk for Gucci in nearly 8 years! She was the youngest black model at 16 years old to appear on the cover of Vogue, and in fact the third EVER black model to do so, period.
She has worked with fashion powerhouses such as Marc Jacob, Louis Vuitton, Christian Dior and counting! You can also find her as Usher’s leading lady in his Dive video.
Lyndsey Scott is not only adorable but she is a beautiful black Nubianette who hails from New Jersey and is signed to Click Model Management New York. She worked and modelled for Vera Wang, Fendi, Gucci and Prada to name a few. Take a look at Lyndsey Scott’s website to see more about this fashionista.
Jessica White is 28 years old from Buffalo, New York. You may recognise her easily from her Covergirl campagins, as well as modelling for the likes of Victoria’s Secret, Maybelline ,Chloe, Jean Paul Gaultier and others. She has tried her hand at acting, such a small role in Big Momma’s House 2.
Arlenis Sosa Pena
This beautiful Nubian from the Dominican Republic is only 23 years old but looks so graceful. She is a spokesmodel for Lancome and has appeared in Vogue, Elle, i-D and Harper’s Bazaar.
Sessilee Lopez is as beautiful as her name sounds. She was part of the All Black Vogue in 2009 with Naomi Campbell and Jourdann Dunn. She is of Dominican and Portuguese descent. Signed to IMG model agency, she has worked for Marc Jacobs, Hermes, Karl Lagerfield as well as many others.
Liya Kebede orignates from Ethiopia which makes her a true Nubian Sister! She models for Gucci and Estee Lauder to name a few. She also is a great ambassador for the World Health Organisation’s Maternal, Newborn and Child Health Campaign.
This Somalian-Canadian is 25 years old, but already has left a mark working for Ralph Lauren and appearing in Italian Vogue and is definitely some one I hope to hear about more and more.
Yasmin is 36 years old and is a Canadian national but hails from Somalia originally. She has done runway for Christion Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier as well as adverts for D&G, Escada, Chanel and H&M.
